Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Bie­der­mann Com­ments on Speak­er Bon­nen Giv­ing Democ­rats More Influ­ence Over the Texas Budget

FREDERICKSBURG, TX — On Mon­day it was announced that Speak­er Bon­nen removed Drew Dar­by, a Repub­li­can crit­ic of the Speak­er, from his posi­tion on the Leg­isla­tive Bud­get Board. Much to the sur­prise of some Repub­li­cans, Bon­nen appoint­ed a lib­er­al Demo­c­rat, Mary Gon­za­lez, to replace Darby.

On Tues­day, Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Bie­der­mann com­ment­ed on Speak­er Bon­nen’s deci­sion to demote one of his Repub­li­can crit­ics by remov­ing him from the Leg­isla­tive Bud­get Board, and replac­ing him with a lib­er­al Democrat. 

Bie­der­mann com­ment­ed say­ing, “At a time when Texas is fac­ing an eco­nom­ic cri­sis we should be empow­er­ing fis­cal con­ser­v­a­tives who have been fight­ing to curb spend­ing and pro­tect our sav­ings account. Speak­er Bon­nen’s actions put more influ­ence in Demo­c­rat hands over our bud­get, the absolute wrong move at this time.”

“I’m more than will­ing to work with Democ­rats on issues we agree upon. I’ve worked with Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Gon­za­lez on issues when we agree. One dis­agree­ment we had last ses­sion was on the mat­ter of whether to ban a state income tax. I vot­ed for the mea­sure, she vot­ed against it. I think Tex­ans should be con­cerned that a Texas House mem­ber who sup­port­ed a state income tax just last ses­sion was just ele­vat­ed to a posi­tion of influ­ence on our bud­get with no expla­na­tion from our Speak­er,” Bie­der­mann concluded.
